The Beauty of Yoga
by Sheila Palmquist RYT
When we get dressed for the day we chose our clothes to balance the external elements and balance our internal comfort. Yoga is practiced in much the same way, with attention and intention.
Yoga provides group dynamics without the need to prove anything or keep up with anyone else. You get the benefits of being in a group with a teacher led class but you have no pressure to keep up like you would in an aerobics class. Study after study proves that group fitness gets significantly better results than trying to do things alone.
In the winter time most of us eat more, and not necessarily the best foods either! So by taking yoga, we not only gain flexibility and strength, but we also get a level of calorie burning cardio vascular training. We also learn how to align the bones to keep the muscles working in balance and from becoming exhausted in our everyday activities. It is the best type of fitness workout there is for the total package of strengthening, stretching, and cardio.
During the winter the body needs more sleep and yoga has been researched to help people sleep better. Many times people suffer from the inability to quiet the mind chatter, resulting in mental exhaustion. Taking yoga classes allows most to reduce stress and sleep much better almost right away. The ability to help stretch and relax the body does wonders for the mind, and spirit during the cold seasons.
One of the biggest benefits of taking yoga classes is that you work at your own level and with awareness. Being mindful of what is benefiting the body and when the mental drive to do more pushes us out of balance. Thus, creating a discussion between the internal “knowing”, and the external “thinking”. After a holiday season of Christmas and New Years parties, most of us have slipped in the food and exercise departments. Getting started back into a routine is difficult and a group setting is what makes yoga so much better than a typical gym membership. A healthy mind and body, allows the beauty of the spirit to shine through.
